Abyssinian Oil

Abyssinian Oil

A part of the of the Brassicaceae family, Abyssinian oil, also called Crambe abyssinica, is an oilseed crop that originated in the highlands of Ethiopia, also known as Abyssinia. It was then brought into the Mediterranean region for domestication and was later introduced in eastern Europe for cultivation.

Back in the 20th century, Abyssinian oil was mainly used for different industrial applications like as a protein supplement for animal feed, additives in plastic products, and as a base for paints because of its high erucic acid content.

Nowadays, Abyssinian is cultivated for skincare purposes. It serves as a potent addition to face and hair serum formulas. It is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidant properties that help boost collagen production, calm inflammation, and moisturise the skin.

What is Abyssinian Oil?

Abyssinian oil is derived from the flowers of Crambe abyssinica plant by cold-pressing. It comes in clear liquid form and pale yellow colour, with a mild, pleasant smell. Unlike rosehip oil that may turn rancid after a few weeks, Abyssinian oil can stay fresh up to 24 months because of its high oxidative stability, especially when stored in a cool and dry place.

Natural Vitamins in Abyssinian Oil

Abyssinian oil is a useful source of the following vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamins B1, B2, and B6
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Omega-6 fatty acids
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Omega-9 fatty acids

The Abyssinian oil vitamins are an essential nutrient that supports skin function and promotes skin cell regeneration. Without them, your skin can become extremely dry and even more susceptible to the effects of long-term exposure to free radicals.

As for the essential fatty acids, they provide a natural barrier to your skin against sun damage and pollution. They help lock moisture in and keep free radicals out, so you can have a plump and youthful skin. They may also reduce inflammation caused by acne and other skin diseases like psoriasis.

Abyssinian Oil Benefits for Skin and Hair

When used in hair care products, Abyssinian oil may help improve shine, natural lustre, lubricity, and protection against irritants.

Abyssinian oil offers a natural way to condition your dry hair instantly without using chemical products, such as those that are made from silicone. This is also why it’s often compared to Argan oil, only it has higher concentration of Omega-9. Meaning to say, it can be easily absorbed into your hair and intensely nourish it.

When used as a body and face serum, Abyssinian oil feels light and non-greasy to the skin. This suggests that it works excellently as a sealing oil which is essential in locking in that much-needed moisture. Therefore, it can leave your skin smooth and supple, as well as aide in reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

How to Use Abyssinian Oil

You can add Abyssinian oil to your serums, creams, body wash products, lotions, liquid soaps, mascara, lip gloss, shampoo and conditioner, relaxers, and hair styling products. Its lightweight and fast-absorbing nature won’t leave your skin or hair feeling sticky or greasy, making it a perfect leave-on hair and skin conditioner.
